Jessica Van Roekel

I grew up in rural Iowa with two brothers, hobby animals, and wide open space to explore which was the springboard that launched me into a lifelong love of the outdoors and the desire to share it with others. Right after college, I headed out west to pursue outdoor education and commercial guiding, taking people of all ages into the backcountry. I discovered my love for teaching and cultivating curiosity as a program coordinator at Riverside Bible Camp and it is such a joy to be able to combine my love for teaching and spending time with children with my passion for the outdoors. When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me exploring new places with my family, cooking, running, canoeing, and climbing with my husband, Joey, and kids Moses and Rosemary.

Joseph Van Roekel

With hands-on experience teaching children at Wildwood Hills Ranch, I bring a deep love for connecting young minds to the wonders of the natural world. Whether it’s exploring trails, observing wildlife, or simply playing in the sunshine, I believe that nature is one of the best classrooms a child can have. My time at Wildwood Hills Ranch allowed me to guide kids through engaging outdoor activities that foster curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for creation. I thrive in environments where learning is active, joyful, and rooted in the beauty of the outdoors.

Guest Teachers

At the Little Hive, we are thrilled to welcome a variety of guest teachers who bring the natural world to life through their unique areas of expertise. These passionate educators include wildlife biologists, bird watchers, entomologists, naturalists, and conservationists who each offer hands-on learning experiences rooted in their field. Whether it's identifying local bird calls, tracking animal footprints, studying insects up close, or learning about native Iowa plants, our guest teachers inspire curiosity and wonder in every child.
